Before I leave to go to New Zealand I need to take:

NEW ZEALAND ACCOMMODATIONS

WOOFing

New Zealand accommodations for the adventurer and philosopher. If you want to work your way through New Zealand and live and learn with the locals, then WOOFing may be the thing for you. WOOF stands for Willing Workers On Organic Farms. It's a worldwide organization that you join, that links workers with hosts. WOOFers live and work with Kiwi families and get hands on experience with organic farming, permaculture, natural building, alternative energy and a host of other jobs. WOOFer stays range from a few days to a few weeks with the host providing food and shelter in exchange for labor.

FARMSTAYS

Another way to see New Zealand from a local perspective is to live and stay with a Kiwi family. These are similar to bed and breakfasts. Different from WOOFing, in this arrangement you pay for your food and lodging rather than work for it. This is a better alternative for people looking to enjoy a holiday or vacation living with the locals.

BACKPACKER HOSTELS

Backpacking is a popular and inexpensive way to travel around New Zealand. The cost of staying at a hostel is a fraction of what it is for a hotel, averaging about $25 per night. Hostel accomodations vary from basic dormitories to some very nice private cottages. This is the simplest of New Zealand accommodations.

Quest Serviced Apartments

We have only stayed at one of these but it was a wonderful experience. These are temporary apartments more than hotel rooms, complete with washer and dryers, a small kitchen, and other homey options. The coolest thing was all the energy saving features built in. like hall lights that only turn on when there is someone in the hall and appliances that turn off when you close and lock the front door. This caused a slight problem when we left the washer running when we left one day. It turned off after we shut the door. This is one of the finer, affordable, New Zealand accomodations.
